Georgia Revisited: Part III (Pre-Trip)

August 26, 2017 by Billy Martinsky

Many things come in threes. Musketeers often tend to do so, as well as blind mice. Sometimes the third of something can be the best (as with Lord of the Rings), while other times, not so much (as with The Godfather). Back in the 80s, the third of something may have contained Mr. T, but now, times seem to have changed.

Anyway, I begin with this odd ramblings about the number that follows two and precedes four because of my upcoming situation. After having spent the past month home in the States, working as a day laborer, making up for two years without peanut butter, and saving enough money so that my bank account is now in the positive numbers, I feel that I'm quite ready for the next adventure. I debated internally about going to some place new, but the more I thought, the more I started to feel an itch to return to an old favorite. At first, I tried to ignore this, but the itch kept growing and no matter how much I tried to scratch it (and believe me, there was quite a lot of scratching), it wouldn't go away. Finally I submitted and purchased a plane ticket to the mountainous Caucasus nation of Georgia.

But this time it is going to be different. The previous two times, I stayed just over a week in the country and spent about half my days in Tbilisi and the other half in the mountains. This time, I'll be there nearly two months, working at a guesthouse in a remote, desert-like village called Udabno located in the wine country and run by a bunch of Polish hippies. Even though this means I will be obliged to carry out some work related obligations (in exchange for free room and board), I nonetheless look forward to the experience in the way a hyperactive child on speed looks forward to Christmas morning.

What shall lay ahead? What glorious adventures and hilarious misfortunes may befall me? Well, I have nearly died during each of my previous visits (see stories Man on a Mountain and Taxi of Terror) and they do say that third time's the charm. That said, if I do happen to meet my demise, I'll be posthumously hiring someone to run globalhobos.com, so if you're in need of a job, follow along and see if your opportunity arises!

Friends, adventure awaits!
